Global Gateway Forum receives cold reception in Europe

EU to Host Global Gateway Forum 2025 in Brussels

On October 9, 2025, the European Commission will launch a two-day conference in Brussels, named the Global Gateway Forum 2025, to promote its global infrastructure strategy. The event, opened by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, will focus on investments in energy, transportation, and digital connectivity.

The Global Gateway initiative is seen as the EU's counter to China's Belt and Road Initiative. However, interest in the forum appears limited, with no EU heads of state or government confirming attendance as of October 8. Discussions were ongoing regarding participation from the Prime Minister of Luxembourg and the Deputy Prime Ministers of Poland and Belgium.

Confirmed attendees include leaders from Grenada, Ethiopia, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, South Africa, Cape Verde, and Mauritania. They will engage in talks on energy projects, transport corridors, and digital infrastructure.

On October 10, expert panels will explore "Strategic Partnerships," covering sustainable transport, energy security, industrial competitiveness, and digital networking's geopolitical role. Highlighted projects include the Lobito Corridor in Africa, the ASEAN Power Grid, and the Medusa submarine cable system.

The forum, initially planned earlier in 2025, was rescheduled to the fall. Analysts expect it to yield technical and economic agreements but lack significant political traction.
